It’s 2013, is your website ready?

What type of website do you have? You do have a website, don’t you? Let’s see: a brochure site, content management system, mobile version, responsive, blog, photo sharing, informational, interactive, e-commerce, whew! there’s a lot and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. What is right for your business? And there is no need for Flash. Let me repeat myself, you do not need a website built on flash. There are many reasons why and I will save those reasons for another post.

At a minimum you should have your seat saved in the world wide web and while you are at it, make sure it has a content management system so that YOU can keep your site up to date. If not, your site will get lost among all the dying, never updated websites in internet space.

You have a storefront, correct? You should have a website as well. Selling something, sell it online as well. Take photos, get those online. Write in the daily paper, share it online. Think of your website as an extension of your brick and mortar shop.

“But I don’t have time.” Yes, I know we have all said that and it is true as long as you think so. But you do have time to go unlock your store; and turn on the lights. You have time to photoshop your photos. Make time and update your site like crazy. Ok, not like crazy but keep it consistent and regular.

Here’s a short list of what I am doing in 2013:

  • Creating my unique blogging topics
  • Mapping out how often I will post them
  • Do my research and create topics I would like to share my expertise on
  • And write, write, write. But don’t just write to take up space. Write because you have something unique and useful to share.

I intend to write about 2000 words a month. Which equates to about 500 per week. I am just about there with this first post already.

Now why 2000 month? I will get to this in another post, but it comes down to being found which means you need to create a relationship with your friendly search engine. You want to be seen as an expert in your field, right! Well there are alot of people out there that want to find an expert in your exact position. Build a unique and expert-based relationship with the search engines of the world by writing GREAT, UNIQUE CONTENT! 

I will not get into Search Engine Optimization (SEO) now but I will say that creating unique and expert content is imperitive. Do your own research see what your competition is doing. The guys at Newfangled are great (Expert Based SEO from Newfangled) and they know what they are talking about. If you don’t believe me or them do your own research. It’s easy to google SEO. But the problem is you will have to navigate through different ideas such as back links. These do work and they are good to do as well. But you have to put in the time if you want to reap the rewards. Just my 2 cents.

So for 2013, look at what you can do to promote your business. If you don’t have a working website you are missing out on clients, guests and sales. You will have to invest money and time but what you can gain back may be tenfold.
